A collection of cute vintage animal planters

There was nothing very distinguishing about the array of vintage planters spread out over two tables at the auction house.

Except that they were so cute.

Most were figural, in the shapes of animals, from rabbits to deer to swans to horses to cows. They were waiting to be auctioned to those like me who thought they were adorable. I wasn’t going to buy any of them, but that didn’t stop me from looking them over.

The ceramic pieces were a bright oasis among the other less-colorful items on sale at auction. On the bottom, some were marked Hall and McCoy, both brand-name pottery and ceramics companies. Products from both companies are popular and collectible, so this obviously was someone’s collection.

Several of the planters already had orange absentee-bid stickers on them.
