Collecting bees like they collect honey

When I think of bees, collecting them does not immediately come to mind. I enjoy seeing them at a distance as they fly from flower to flower in my garden sucking up those delicious sweets.

But I never thought of bringing them inside in the form of pottery or ceramics. Items showing the bee as motif stood out at auction recently when a table of them opened up to me as I previewed items for sale.

The pottery was fashioned into all sorts of beehives – as thick candles, as teapots, as a picture frame. There were also bees on a saucer and bees hand-painted on a small planter. Most were beehive honeypots.

Googling, I found that a lot of people apparently are enamored with the bee as motif, because several sites were selling pottery and ceramics, stamps for a craft project, trinket boxes and lots of cups.
