As soon as I saw the item, I figured out what it was. It was designed to be a machine to help us, but looked as if it would do us harm.
It was a vintage version of a piece of equipment that some of us would consider torture, but we pay homage to it nonetheless. It makes promises – or causes us to make promises – that we will not likely keep. There are some among us, however, who cannot live without it.
It is part of a family of machines and other apparatus that we have combined with natural elements to help us live long healthy lives.
