Revisiting Ebony’s 1965 “White Problem in America” issue

Posted in Black history, Ephemera/Paper/Documents, and history

Several years ago, I was lucky to find an issue of Ebony magazine from 1965 that was devoted solely to race in America. This was the middle of the civil rights movement, and John H. Johnson and his magazine shifted the light on white America with the special issue titled “The White Problem in America.”

We seem to be right back where we were as a nation – with the unresolved issue of racism. Back then, Johnson urged white America to “look at himself more thoroughly” in an effort to solve “this country’s most vital problem.”

Here’s what I wrote in 2013 about the Ebony issue. Interestingly, I found it at auction in the midst of a controversial local magazine story that would have felt right at home among the prejudices of 1960s America.
