I’m not into cats, dogs or other animals as pets. I don’t want to clean up after them inside my house or outside during their walk.
I do appreciate people who love dogs and cats, and see them as companions and parts of the family. But mine is not one of the 36 million households that owns them.
That doesn’t mean I don’t find them adorable sometimes in other forms. I’ve seen them as ceramic figurines and stuffed furry creatures, and I’ve written about them. Heck, I even went to see the musical “Cats” on Broadway years ago.
At auction recently, I came across a white two-tier chair with hand-painted cats on them. I must say it was rather sweet. The back slats bore curled-up cats in combination colors of gray, black, white, orange and yellow. The seat showed two cats in a peaceable kingdom scene posing with a bird (shouldn’t they be chasing it?). The second tier presented playful cats, again with a bird.
The most adorable one I’ve seen at auction was a ceramic cat that was made in Italy for Saks Fifth Avenue. I liked it so much that I actually bought it. Another time, I came across an automaton cat that was a cobbler, and also some “Cat Cry” noisemakers that had lost their sounds. I also attended a high school performance of “The Cat in the Hat” directed by a teacher-friend of mine.
Here are other images from the chair at auction:
I am with you. I am not a pet person either. I think even a goldfish would be too much for me (laugh).
I like the chair in the photo. It looks like it might convert to something else like a step stool or desk top.
