When I saw the wooden chest with the shutters, I was a little confused. It didn’t seem to fit into the collection sprawled endlessly against the auction-house walls, on shelves attached to the walls, inside tall and short glass cases, on tables and under tables.
The item was part of a large collection on sale at auction recently. Last month, the auction house had sold the best of the collection on-site and online. This new batch was undoubtedly the leftovers, and they all were dusty from having been stored and forgotten.
This particular item and several others near it seemed out of place. What was it?
I opened the shutters and found the answer. With the commonality of all of the other objects for sale, I should’ve figured out the purpose of this deceptive little tabletop chest.
