Vintage illustrations clipped from magazines, Part 2

Posted in Animals, and Ephemera/Paper/Documents

This is the second group of cover and inside-page illustrations from the 1930s that someone clipped from magazines and stored away. Most of these are illustrations of dogs and other animals.

I came across these while looking through some ephemera I bought at auction some time ago that I had put aside and forgotten. Some of the illustrators included John Gee (also a children’s book illustrator) and Diana Thorne. Most were not signed.

What was just as interesting about these were the ads on the flip side of the pages.

Here’s a glimpse of some of the covers and ads. The first group of illustrations used people as subjects. Another group used flowers.

Magazine illustration, children on beach
This illustration of kids at play on the beach with their dog is by John Gee. Even the doll gets into the action.

Magazine illustration, cat
This whimsical illustration on the cover of the August 1933 Woman Home Companion is by Diana Thorne. Flip side: A cucumber, tomato and radish salad with Heinz cider and olive oil.

Magazine illustration, zebras performing
This circus illustration with zebras is signed Mochi. Flip side: Congoleum rug on the floor of a 1933 “modern kitchen.”

Magazine illustration, terrier with trunks
An inside page with illustration of a Scottish terrier, unsigned. Flip side: Lux dishwashing powder for washing underthings, too, so you won’t “offend” others. The ad admonishes young women for wearing their undies a second day without washing them.

Magazine illustration, terrier and pup
An unsigned illustration of a terrier and pup.

Magazine illustration, cocker spaniels
An unsigned illustration of cocker spaniels. Flip side: An ad for Bon Ami cleanser, which makes it easier to clean up after “the men” in the family.

Magazine illustration, terrier dog
Another terrier illustration, unsigned. Flip side: A woman with Lucky Strike cigarettes.
