Sometimes things are sweet just because they’re small.
I love art pottery, and I don’t think pieces have to be big to show off. A small piece of clay in the right creative hands can yield treasures. I come across large pieces of pottery pretty often, and sometimes I’ll bid on some that speak to me.
At one auction, I came across three pieces that are just gorgeous. Because they are tiny. The auctioneer grouped them together, sliding them to the side as he auctioned other glassware – as if he were saving these little delectables (like pieces of chocolate) for last.
I don’t recall if there were other bidders but I do remember that I was determined to get them. And I did. They were fashioned by different artists (they are signed on the bottom), so they weren’t necessarily conceived as a grouping. But the bluish & greenish tones in each of them blends perfectly with the others to make them feel like a whole. The larger of the three offers an interesting contrast. Two are glazed, one is matte finish.
They’re so small that I can sit each in the palm of my hand, handling them as delicately as a rose. The fat round one is 3″ tall, the ginger-jar-shaped one is 2 1/4″ tall, and the squat one is 1 7/8″ tall.
This miniature stoneware jug (similar to several large ones I have. I’ll write about them at another time) is another of my favorites.
