Can you guess what these antique kitchen & tool items are?

All of the items were rather lovely in their simplicity. On first glance, I was totally befuddled about the identity of three of them, and the fourth was so similar to its contemporary counterpart that it was easily recognizable.

They were made of heavy metal, weather-beaten wood and tin, and all were antiques, manufactured at a time before plastic was widely produced.

Two of the items were a must in the kitchen, the others a necessity for tradesmen and shopkeepers (but also for the kitchen). One of the items looked like a baking dish. Its shape resembled a flower and it looked too pretty to be so utilitarian.

I get a kick out of these old items, most of which have been lost to those of us who are used to gadgets that are easier to handle. But these old-timers hold memories and history that remind us that we were not the first. Fortunately, there are collectors who appreciate their value.

Take a look at all of these items and see if you can guess what they are. Click on the photo above for the answers.

  1. Ha! I got each and every one wrong! So interesting to see the tools of yesteryear. (And I had the same guess as you did on the last one – exactly where my mind went. Never would have imagined its actual purpose!)
